Adult Learning

Jewish learning is a lifelong process—the more you know, the more you realize you have yet to learn. As you delve into Jewish texts, history, thought, ethics, arts and culture, you’re bound to be intrigued by concepts and insights that lead you farther down the path of discovery. Along the way, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of your personal connection to Judaism, as well as an appreciation for Judaism’s sage perceptions about the human condition.

Hebrew College offers many points of entry along the path of lifelong Jewish learning:

Me'ah

This two-year intensive adult Jewish learning program created by Hebrew College in partnership with Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston, immerses you in reading core Jewish texts, grappling with concepts representing the historical, cultural and political movements from four eras—biblical, rabbinic, medieval and modern. For approximately 100 hours of class time (Me'ah means "100" in Hebrew) over a two-year period, you'll have a chance to read, think and open your mind to new ideas.

Me'ah in Focus

New this fall, Me’ah in Focus is your opportunity to focus in-depth on contemporary Jewish issues and concepts. Study with fellow adult learners who enjoy a challenge, guided by distinguished faculty at convenient locations throughout the Greater Boston community. Whether you’re a Me’ah graduate who wants to delve into a topic that intrigued you during your Me’ah studies, or someone who wants to experience the growth and engagement of sophisticated adult Jewish education, this innovative adult learning program is designed with your interests and busy schedule in mind.

Me'ah Graduate Institute (MGI)

MGI enables you to take your Me’ah experience or equivalent Jewish adult education a step further. You can study at your own pace with the best educators, and focus on the texts and topics you found most intriguing in Me'ah. Your time commitment is defined by your personal objectives. You may choose to study just for the love of learning or to enroll in our Master of Jewish Liberal Studies (MJLS) program, designed for advanced adult learners who want a challenge that fits into their busy schedules.

Ikkarim

Designed for parents of young Jewish children (newborn to 7), Ikkarim is a 19-week, inspirational journey through ancient texts and modern themes as you search for your ikkarim, which in classical Hebrew refers to both "roots" and "principles." Explore basic Jewish values and their modern significance by bringing contemporary concerns to text study. Discover how these values apply within and can enrich circles of relationships: with children, spouses and friends; with the Jewish people; with ourselves and with God.

Ulpan

Hebrew College’s nine-level Ulpan is New England's most comprehensive modern Hebrew program. Adapting the linguistic immersion method developed and popularized in Israel, Ulpan is a full-language program that teaches grammar, reading comprehension and conversation skills. Through discussion of contemporary political, social and cultural topics, and through readings drawn from current Israeli news and social commentary, you will advance in your Hebrew fluency and discover Hebrew as a living language.

Special Events and Lectures

Special events and lectures throughout the year at Hebrew College enable you to join our conversation about classical and contemporary Jewish topics as well as current issues from a Jewish perspective. You can also learn about Jewish arts and culture as you enjoy outstanding performances.
